Reflection on 2210: The Collapse?

This documentary film, 2210: The Collapse, has discusses how we are quickly depleting our natural resources. It discusses how the people of 2210 would analyze the fall of some great cities, and predicts them through the potential threats that are held against us today: water, energy, and food.

Though I have always been well aware of the fact that we are using up the limited supply of natural resources, I tended to be rather ignorant of the fact that it could result in awful disasters if not prevented. Such natural resources as oil and coal seems to be so abundant because of its availability and use in our every day life. However, these fossil fuels are not only harmful to the environment, but also not permanent. Many people, including myself, has thought this grave issue as a simple matter, and provided a too simple answer; to replace fossil fuels with alternative energy sources such as solar and wind energy. However, after the film explained its inefficiency of the net production of energy compared to fossil fuels, hope started to dwindle and new concerns started to build up. To prevent an energy crisis in the future, people should start to prepare right now and allocate the limited amount of resources wisely. Our current society seems too oblivious of the fact that one day, these resources would no longer be there. Yet it is this misconception that would one day strike us, and I am afraid of the fact that too many people are not as aware of how much they are damaging the earth in its progress. One good example is reflected in the food supplies. At the moment, farmers are producing enough food to feed the people. However, if the population continues to rise and the soil becomes worse and worse due to the farmers’ immediate benefits, in long term we will reach a definite food crisis that is caused by infertile soil. These farmers should quickly become enlightened of the future consequences that could be brought by their blind pursuit and modify their plans so that following generations can continue on. It is everyone’s decision together that would make a change.

I shall try my best to make a change myself. Whether or not an individual’s change of actions would bring alternative solutions to the problem, it is definitely worth trying. Though the problems may currently seem small to many people of my generation, we should acknowledge the fact that it would be our generation that would be hammered by the amplified effects of this disaster. We have no one else to rely on but ourselves, thus we should tackle these problems with our own actions and take responsibility for it. can make a change, and we should make it when we can.
